Medication

Pump for Cognitively

Impaired

Patients

Project Summary

Bold Insight was approached by a client to assess a medication pump system and its instructional materials for safety and effectiveness. The users of this device were patients with a degenerative neurological condition, leading to a heightened need to clear, intuitive design. Our team collectively completed over 20 simulated-use sessions, with time for iteration half way through the research process. About half of participants received training prior to their simulated use session. Results from this research led to changes in the device and instructional materials that reduced use errors and close-calls in action and knowledge assessment tasks. Research on this device has moved into a second formative stage prior to pre-validation testing.

Roles I played

  • Moderated highly regulated in-person research during COVID-19

  • Synthesized trends from research sessions

  • Recommended changes to the device and instructional materials based on research findings

  • Reported research findings, changes made to materials, and impacts of changes in written form.

Project Summary

Bold Insight was approached by a client to assess how easily a new branding language was to understand when applied to multiple lines of medication cartons. The cartons contained a variety of medications, different doses, and different injection methods. The purpose of the study was to ensure that pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and the general population could differentiate between the cartons. Each participant was asked to retrieve three cartons from a refrigerator in the test room based on prescription information. General population participants were also asked knowledge assessment questions to gauge how effective the additional text on the cartons was for non-clinical users. Results from this research led to design changes related to text placement, font size/weight, and visual indicators of device quantity.
